The Flavia is a little different from most other single-serve machines that it doesn't really take the same type of "pod". Flavia makes drinks using a flat packet instead. Inside is a measured portion of coffee grounds and a filter. The machine puffs it open with a burst of air and the water flows right through the pack.
They have quite a range of drinks, and their coffee selection is excellent. You can make your choices from their varietal collection that relies on the unique flavor qualities in coffees from different geographic regions to make a special cup, or a mix of different roasting levels for a light or dark brew. And with a few flavored choices, there is more than enough for anyone.
Single Origin Coffees
In their line of single origin coffees, you can really explore the subtle taste differences from one coffee region to another. They currently have 5 varieties to choose from.
Both the Ethiopia and the Kenya have distinctive sweet and slightly fruity tones to them, and the Colombia is a very nice "every day" kind of coffee that would suit most palates. The Sumatra is a bolder brew, and the Costa Rica has a lighter taste that is almost sweet.
Roasts
You can go from light to dark when choosing a specific roast for your beans, changing the taste dramatically as you go. At the dark end of the spectrum, you have French Roast, Barista's Blend and Espresso Roast. All three are really bold and full of smooth flavor.
In the mid-range, there are more available. The Foundry Blend and Artisan Roast are all in this area but each with their own specific mix of taste and strength. These are the ones for most people's preferences and a good place to start if you are new to brewing with a Flavia.
You can also get a few lighter roasts for the Flavia, such as the Alterra House Blend and the Morning Roast. They are a lighter roast (meaning a bit higher in caffeine) and a less bold flavor for a refreshing cup.
If you're looking for a decaf, you can choose either the Alterra House Blend or the French Roast. Those are the only ones Flavia offers as a decaf right now.
Flavored Coffees
Only a few choices in this area, but worth a mention nonetheless. There is a sweet and creamy French Vanilla, and roasted Hazelnut. Either one would make a nice dessert drink.
And that's just the coffee selection. If you want to brew tea with a Flavia, you can find black, green, and even white teas along with a number of very nice herbal and fruit blends. They even have a spiced chai. There are also several varieties of hot chocolate, cappuccino and latte mixes that you can use with a Flavia for a sweeter treat in your cup. The Milky Way and Mars swirls are unique to Flavia and you won't find drink options like that anywhere else.
